We're talking poop! Your first postpartum poop. Yup. I said it - POOP. No one seems to talk about the realities of posptartum mom life. That's why you have me (wink wink).
You will inevitably have 3 births. Oh yes.
#3. The good ole first Postpartum bowel movement
Dont worry, it's not as scary as it may sound. Although, it can be a bit of a challenge that first go around. Your body has done an amazing thing by delivering a baby - however delivery looks for you, vaginal, tearing, cesarean.
Nonetheless, you will need to go number two. Usually around days 2-4 postpartum. Now, how to ease the impact and make it a peaceful bowel movement?
1. Take a stool softener
In your birthing place, you most likely will get offered Colace. Start the stool softeners as soon as you can, your body will thank you come pooping time. Stool softeners do not make you go number two, it helps hydrate and soften for the way out.
2. Fiber, fiber, fiber
Load up on fiber rich foods, such as - Fiber cereal, prunes, even Natural Calm a relaxing magnesium supplement.
3. Keep hydrated
Your intestines get a little greedy with water absorption causing strain upon existing. You do not want that. Staying hydrated helps keep the old pipes lubed up allowing for a gentle glide.
4. Poop like a kid
When kiddos sit on a toilet, they are hunched over knees up. Our toilets are not designed for proper elimination. Grab yourself a small step stool, feet up and lean forward. This allows for less straining (which you do not want, especially if you have stitches or a cesarean)
5. Squirt, Dab, Pat
Your lady bits are a little tender, may have stitches or even hemorrhoids. Using dry scratchy toilet paper is the last thing you want to do. You should get a Peri Bottle (fill with warm water) from the hospital. Use that instead of wiping. Dab or pat dry with Fresh Cleanse pads. They are cooling and generate the healing process.
